Christmas Day at Kids Company

Posted by whatyoudomatters on December 26, 2014 at 5:00 PM

I fell in with love with Kids Company about 2 years ago, I can't remember where or who introduced to me to this charity but ever since then I have adore the KidsCo ethos. My previous experience of Kids Co is donating presents for their Christmas 2012, then joined their poverty busting volunteering deparment in 2012 to help source out Christmas presents for the kids and I have also been part of their placement scheme.

Christmas day has always been spent with my family. I am blessed with a family that is extremely supportive and with a mother who has always encouraged me to do what I want to do. On this day, I wanted to be part of making a difference to others this year and having discussed the idea with my mum, I signed up to volunteer in Autumn.

Picked up by a taxi that Kids Co organised was so surreal as I'm usually up moaning about getting ready for church!
I was assigned to the dining area team where I would be serving expected over 4,000 vulnerable children and families. Before it started at 11am, we were all given a tour around the Oval to see the other rooms. There was the cinema room, chill out room, disco hall, games hall and many more. Camila, the founder of Kids Company even had her own grotto where she would greet 2000 over 16 year olds and bless them with more gifts. I was also VERY lucky to see Camila who gave a wonderful speech of appreciation to all the volunteers that helped out today.

To me, it as so much more than Disney- the staff and other volunteers were all so extrememly friendly and I was pretty excited!
From 11pm to 4pm, I served (trying my absolute best to not make that much mess!!) a variety of jerk chicken, bbq wings, stuffing, jerk sauce, pasta and that was only a couple of what was being served. Everyone I met were wonderful, all the kids had the biggest smiles! After all the guests had left, it was the massive job of cleaning up!
It was exhausting, but the thing about exhaustion is that you dont feel it if you're having fun- only at the end!!! & I was SHATTERED!

It's really made me even more hungry to help. Maybe again next Christmas?
